Lambda “Marching On” Recruitment Drive

Dear Alumnus,
The 2007-2008 Lambda “Marching On” Recruitment Drive is under way. All current active alumni brothers are required to renew their active status by registering with the national organization and updating their contact information. Non-active alumni or new graduates can also become active by registering with the national organization and updating their contact information.

The Official “Marching On” Recruitment Drive runs until September 30, 2007. This includes a 30-day grace period during the month of September 2007 to existing active alumni in order to secure consistent active membership status as described in our constitution.

Being active within our fraternity mean different things to different brothers, however allow me to explain my thoughts.

Our Lambda is as unique as the individual brothers that make it a whole. We are all scatter in different areas of the world, living different lifestyles, striving for different goals, having different levels of success. In a nutshell, a group made up of individuals living different lives. What unites us is the bond of brotherhood that comes alive when we share a moment together, from watching a game to visiting our home chapters. It does not matter if we are line brothers or perfect strangers, we gravitate to the one phenomenon to be true, “If you are a Lambda, then you are my Brother!” We are Lambda man and our blood bleeds brown. The bond that makes Lambda whole, also makes us complete.

The National Executive Board and alumni brothers around the country are engage in a mission to develop a true Nation under Lambda. We want to set out and re-awaken the Lambda Spirit inside our alumni brothers. This past year, we created L.A.M.B.D.A (Lambda Action Movement for the Betterment and Development of the Alumnus). We are organizing Alumni Chapters all around the country, beginning to offer key services to the alumni, creating a culture of support and better communication and interaction with one another.

All of which can only be possible with the support and action of our fellow alumni. We need brothers to become active and take part in the advancement of our organization. As we move forward with our goals as individuals, we also must move forward with our goals for La Fraternidad. As new Initiatives are role out, please take the time to review them and ask yourself how you can help make them a success. Take part in the foundation of a new Alumni Chapter in your area and encourage more brothers to become active.

I thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy message and in helping with the growth of our Lambda Theta Phi.

New York Cares Day 2007

On Saturday, October 20, 2007 from 9:30am to 3:30pm there is an annual event to raise money to support New York Cares'''' year-round programming and revitalize schools for New York City kids.New York Cares is looking for 8,000 volunteers to help paint a brighter future for New York City students. It a great opportunity to help give thousands of children cleaner, safer and more stimulating environments in which to learn and grow.

The New York Alumni chapter is in the process of collecting Lambda Brothers to join our efforts on this day. This is a fun day of painting and cleaning with fellow New Yorkers. I hope we can get a great turn out for this event.

In addition to being a great day of service, New York Cares Day is also an important fundraiser for New York Cares. Like a walk-a-thon, they encourage volunteers to ask family, friends and co-workers to pledge donations in honor of the service they perform that day. Last year, New York Cares touched the lives of over 335,000 New Yorkers in need—reading with children, serving food to the hungry, distributing coats and holiday gifts to those who would otherwise go without, and so much more. Their work would not be possible without financial support.

Lambda raises funds for Peru quake victims

Group raises funds for Peru quake victims

Friday, August 24, 2007
By KAREN KELLER, HERALD NEWS

CLIFTON – People gathered with a Hispanic fraternity Thursday night in the backyard of a Broad Street home to raise money for those affected by the massive Aug. 15 earthquake near Lima, Peru.

The event, sponsored by Lambda Theta Phi, was designed to attract as many as 200 people, with a goal of raising $10,000, said Ray Lago, who organized the event.

Lago, a founder of the fraternity at Kean University in 1975, said the money will be used to purchase food, water, clothing and other day-to-day essentials to aid those devastated by the magnitude-8 earthquake.

Lago said that over the next two weeks he plans to personally deliver the supplies directly to Peruvian victims.

Large relief organizations are taking too long to get aid to the stricken South American country, he said "I know there's a lot of causes going around -- a lot of crooked ones," Pahlevi Garcia, 21, a biology major at Kean University, and a fraternity member. "It's good to know we're running a good, honest charity."

Another guest said he was proud his fraternity is representative and is sensitive to what is taking place in all Latin American countries.

"We're trying to make us Latinos better as a whole, to strive for the future," said Julian Del Pino, 22, who is Cuban and majors in economics at Rutgers University.

The Thursday night gathering was the first large fundraising effort held in New Jersey for Peruvian earthquake victims, said Daniel Jara, Peruvian-American president of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey.

Most fundraisers conducted over the past week have been through the Peruvian American National Roundtable -- a nonprofit organization, and the Peruvian Consulate in Paterson, Jara said earlier Thursday.

"(Victims are) still sleeping outside," said Bill Portocarrero, owner of the Broad Street home and a Peruvian-American who grew up in Passaic and owns a mortgage company.

Lambda Theta Phi has held fundraisers since 1975 to benefit victims of major disasters in the U.S. and Latin America, and counts Sen. Bob Menendez, D-Hoboken, as a fraternity member, Lago said.

Paterson and Passaic have the highest concentration of Peruvian-Americans in the United States, with a combined population of 65,000 living in those cities, according to Jara.

New Jersey is home to about 240,000 Peruvians, despite the 2000 U.S. Census reporting about 35,000, he said.

Jara said when he came to Paterson in 1964, only about 30 Peruvian families were living there.
Now about 45 percent of Hispanic-owned businesses in Paterson are operated by Peruvians, he added.

The earthquake killed at least 510 people and left some 1,500 injured or homeless in Peru. Portocarrero believes the death toll is far greater than what has been reported.
"They're off by a lot," he said.

To ensure the success of this benefit, I am asking for your personal support in attending this fundraiser, contributing to the cause and promoting this charity event with brothers and other interested parties. I hope that with your help all brothers in the quad-state area can participate in this event. This affair requires a tremendous commitment from all of us. Any brothers wanting to help with this event can call me directly.

Our goal is to raise a minimum of $10,000.

Shortly after the event, I will personally fly to Peru to locate the targeted families and purchase the needed food, water, clothing and other day-to-day essentials. I will also document some parts of my trip to Peru and share photos and video with all those who participate in this endeavor.

I would greatly appreciate your contribution and will be grateful for your participation in making a meaningful difference in the lives of our fellow families in Peru.

In the meantime, please feel free to call me at 201-315-1299 if you have any questions. Thank you for your kind consideration to this request.
