Civil rights lawyer Diego Bernal proved Saturday that a political neophyte can run for City Council with almost no name recognition or money and overcome opponents with both.
Bernal, 34, sailed to victory in his runoff against retired firefighter and one-time front-runner Ralph Medina. Walking into his victory party, Bernal thanked his opponent for “a good and competitive, spirited race” and said the city's first responders will have a friend and ally in the District 1 office.
“I'm really very humbled that people put their trust in me, and I'm excited about the opportunity,” Bernal said. “I think that this district needs a very diverse and aggressive City Council office, and I'm more than ready to lead that charge.”

Congrats to Rene Diaz of AA chapter for winning the NSF fellowship.
Rene was recentlly featured in article entitled "Rocket Man: Promising Space Career Awaits Engineering Grad" By Chad Binette on May 24, 2011
Here is a quick blurb form the article.
Diaz, an honors student who earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering this month, will head to Georgia Tech in the fall to continue his research into developing a metallic glass that is stronger than steel, more elastic than rubber, almost completely scratch resistant and inexpensive. He will collaborate with researchers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
A National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship valued at $121,500 will cover Diaz’s tuition and also pay him a stipend.
Diaz is one of 10 UCF students and recent graduates who earned NSF Graduate Research Fellowships this year. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees.
